Middle School Lock-In!

The Middle School Youth Group Spring Lock-in will be Friday March 25 from 8pm-8am on March 26. Bring your toothbrush, pj's and a healthy snack to share. Don't forget to invite a friend to come along!

Ski Trip March 5

The family that skis together stays together! So the Wesley Church family is heading to Paoli Peaks in Indiana for a day of skiing on Saturday March 5.

The cost is $67 per person.

We'll be leaving from the church at 7am and returning home around 10pm.

Diary of Ann Frank

We're going to see "The Diary of Ann Frank" on stage at the Indianapolis Repertory Theatre on Saturday February 12!
We'll leave the church at noon in order to make the 4:00 show and then have dinner downtown at the Old Spaghetti Factory. We should be back in Charleston by 9:30 or 10.
Tickets for the show cost $39 and plan on about $15 for dinner. (If you would like to come but the ticket is too expensive, talk to Sarah and we'll work something out.)
Feel free to invite friends or family along. Please let Sarah know by Tuesday February 8 if you're planning to come!

SOUPER BOWL!!

Super Bowl Sunday will be SOUPer Bowl Sunday at Wesley!

The youth group is sponsoring the Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday February 6. We will be collecting cans of soup for the Charleston Food Pantry and money for Soup Stop (the local soup kitchen). Bring soup or money to donate on February 6 and help feed hungry people before you cheer on the Bears or Packers or Jets or Steelers!

Confirmation Meeting January 30

Confirmation classes are beginning for 7th graders (and older youth who haven't been confirmed yet)! Classes will meet during Sunday School beginning February 13. You can register for confirmation class online here.

We will be having an information meeting for youth who want to be part of Confirmation and their parents. We will meet on Sunday January 30 at 3:00 in the church library. See you there!

It's cold and snowy outside which can mean only one thing...it's time to start thinking about what you're going to do on summer break!

This year the high school youth will be heading to Appalachia again to work with ASP (Appalachia Service Project). ASP gives us the chance to serve the people of Appalachia by helping make their homes warmer, safer and drier.

This summer our week at ASP will be June 12-18.

If you would like to come on ASP this summer, please turn in the first payment of $75, along with the participation covenant sign up sheet by Sunday January 9 to reserve your spot on the trip.

We're going to Pumpkin Works in Paris on October 24!

We'll leave the church at 2:00 and be back by 6:45.

Tickets cost $2.50 each (11 tickets for $25). Most corn mazes and activities are 1-2 tickets. Hayrides are 3 tickets.

Join youth from all over our conference at Lake Williamson in Carlinville for a weekend retreat. It's a great time to get to know other people from all over Illinois and play, learn and worship. The cost is $50 per person.

It's August and you know what that means...time for youth group to start again!

Let's get together to welcome the newcomers and have some fun before school starts.

High School (incoming 9th-12th graders) we're getting together at Buffalo Wild Wings on Friday August 13th at 5:30 - we'll meet at the church parking lot.

Middle School (incoming 7th-8th graders) are invited to a potluck right after second service on Sunday August 15 at noon in the church parlor. Bring your parents and a dish to share!

Holiday World Trip Info

What better way to end the summer than with a trip to Holiday World in Indiana? We're planning to go together August 10-11! We will plan to be at the park all day on August 10, stay overnight at a church and head back to Charleston in the morning on August 11. Here's the schedule:

Tuesday August 10

- 6:30am - leave the church parking lot

- Holiday World all day (lunch on your own at the park)

- 7:00pm - leave Holiday World for Newburgh UMC (45 min drive)

- 8:00pm - overnight at Newburgh UMC (we'll have pizza when we get

to the church)

Wednesday August 11

- 8:00am - breakfast and pack up the van

- 9:00am - leave Newburgh and head back to Charleston

- 12:00pm - arrive back at the church

The cost for the trip is $30 per person for tickets, plus $5 per person for pizza on Tuesday night. Everyone will be on their own for lunch at the park and anything else they want to get along the way (souveniers, snacks, etc).

If you're planning to come, let me know and get your money turned in to the church office NO LATER than August 1! (Checks payable to Wesley UMC with "youth trip" in the memo line). If you have friends who are planning to go, please make sure that their parents fill out a Medical Authorization Form.

Chaperones/drivers are needed as well!

Regular youth group is taking a break for the summer, but that doesn't mean we won't see each other! Here's what's coming up!

Tuesday Nights Together (TNT)
Once a month we're getting together on Tuesdays for fellowship and fun. In the words of Nathan "here's how it's going down..."
Tuesday June 8, 5:30-7:30 - Fox Ridge
Drop off at the church - pick up at Fox Ridge.
Bring a volleyball, softball or kickball and food to share with the rest of us!

Join me for a refreshing beverage at the JAC on Saturday afternoons from 1-3. It's pretty casual, just getting together to catch up. I won't be around on June12, 19, 26, July 10, 17 or 24 (whew! busy summer!) but don't let that stop you from getting together!

We're going places this summer - on vacations, mission trips, to camps, etc. Whatever you do this summer, pick up a bumper sticker from where you've been. When we come back together in the fall, we will put them all together and display them in the Youth Room!

This Sunday - May 2 - is the day for the youth to lead worship at 8:30 and 10:45! The service is going to be great!

If you are part of the worship service, come to practice on Saturday from 2:30-4:30 in the sanctuary. Then on Sunday you need to be at the church and in the library NO LATER than 8:00am.

We'll be having breakfast together between services during Sunday School time. If you do eat something before first service, make it small because Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins are making us a BIG feast for breakfast!

Summer Youth Group ideas?

Believe it or not - summer is RIGHT around the corner!

Several of you have asked if we can continue youth group over the summer. And we're going to, but it will look a little bit different...

Instead of meeting every week on Sundays, we're going to meet once a month on Wednesdays. We're calling summer youth group Wesley Wednesdays and instead of meeting at the church we'll do something fun together like a pool party or a cook-out.

What kinds of things do you want to do this summer?
Have a bonfire/cookout at someone's house?
Have a pool party?
Go on a day trip somewhere?
Have a softball game?

Great Lenten Giveaway

During the season of Lent in youth group, we are spending time thinking and reflecting on the things we have, the things we want, and the things we really need. We're also thinking about the ways that we can use what we have been given to be a blessing to others.

During Lent we are doing a project called the Great Lenten Giveaway to help the people at HOPE of East Central Illinois, which is our local domestic violence shelter. HOPE has supplied us witha list of the things that are most needed right now. Some things on the list should be new (like underwear and socks), but I encourage you to think about the things on the list that you already have that could be given away to the folks at HOPE. During youth group each Sunday in Lent, you will bring something that we can give to the people at HOPE.

High School ASP Information

Our week at ASP will be July 18-24, 2010! We won't know until April where we are going, so we may be leaving on July 17 and getting back on July 26. In the meantime, there are a few important dates you need to know.

Sunday December 20 - Participation Covenant and $50 must be turned in to the church office in order to reserve your spot on the trip

Sunday February 21 - $75 must be turned in to the church office

Hanging of the Greens

It's that time again...

Advent is coming and we're getting the church ready. This Sunday (November 22) join us for a potluck after second service at noon. After lunch we'll get the church all festive - decorating trees, putting up wreaths, etc. Someone especially daring is needed to get on the 30 foot ladder to put the wreath over the choir loft.

We'll be doing Hanging of the Greens instead of meeting for UMYF at our regular time. UMYF won't meet on November 27 either, so take that time to hang out with your family and eat turkey sandwiches. We'll be back to our regular schedule starting on December 6.

High School Mission Trip Dates!

Our Summer 2010 high school mission trip will take place during the week of July 18, 2010! We will be doing ASP (Appalachia Service Project) again this year. No word yet on the county in Appalachia where we will be going, but that information will be coming soon! In the meantime, if you would like to come on the trip as a youth or as an adult chaperone, or if you would like more information about the trip, please email Sarah.

ASP updates!

This summer, the high school youth went to Mingo County, West Virginia on ASP. Here's what's going on with the families that they served.

Ruth Branham
Ruth and Scott live in a hollow with the rest of their family. They live in half of their house with only one room which triples as their kitchen, living room and bedroom. They use an outhouse for their bathroom and get their water from a spring. During their week at Ruth and Scott's home, the youth began to dig and fill the foundations for the piers to support the foundation. They also took measurements of the joists. Because of the support all those who helped on Ruth and Scott's house, ASP was able to double the size of the house they were living in. Instead of living in just a 12x24 section of their house, they are now living in the back half of their hosue we were able to finish. To give them the beginnings of a master bedroom and bathroom. They now no longer have to worry about their roof leaking or the siding on the house becoming rotten because it was unfinished.

Cinderella Howard
Cinderella is a very sweet elderly woman who is 86 years old and unable to move around without a wheelchair and the help of her daughter-in-law. Her family had built a wheelchair ramp, but the slope was so steep that Cinderella almost fell out of her chair every time she used it. While they were at her home, the youth set up the posts for the ramp and the porch framing for Cinderella. They removed the decking from her existing porch and revealed the problems under the door. Because of the youth's help, Cinderella will now be able to get out of her home without having to lean back in her wheelchair and try not to fall out.

Donna Canterbury
Donna was raising three grandkids in a run-down trailer next to where her house caught on fire a year ago. There were between 2 and 6 people living in this trailer at any given time. The fire ruined her basement where her two granddaughters slept and caused major damage to the first floor of the house. When the youth arrived her house was not habitable. During the week that the youth were at Donna's home, they replaced the basement floor, ran electrical wire through the room installing 5 outlets and a light. They then insulated and studded out the walks in preparation for finishing touches in the room. With all of the hard work and efforts of all the volunteers throughout the summer, the electricity was fully restored to Donna's house by the end of the eight weeks. Volunteers also finished two rooms for the family. Now instead of living in the run-down trailer next to their home, the family was able to move back into their house again.

On Sunday November 8 everyone who went on ASP will be gathering at the Stoltz's house for a reunion party. Bring your pictures from the trip. Girls bring chips, guys bring soda. This week we're talking about what it means to act globally as the church. John Wesley once said "the whole world is my parish." What does that mean? How does the United Methodist Church carry on John Wesley's call to minister to the whole world? What are we doing? What can we do?

Get into the Halloween spirit with a trip to the pumpkin patch. There are corn mazes, games and hayrides for you to enjoy and we'll end the evening with a bonfire. Cost is $25 for 11 tickets - additional tickets are $2.50 each.

We'll spend our UMYF time distributing Food Pantry calendars to homes in Charleston.
